You might remember Eric Chenaux from last week’s Constellation release, ‘Sandro Perri Plays Polmo Polpo’ as Chenaux was Perri’s musical compadré, and certainly ‘Dull Lights’ seems like a continuation of themes touched upon on that album. It’s a different direction for the post-rock affiliated Constellation label but it’s a very welcome move, the focus is still on Canada (or Montreal to be exact) but we have a different sound explored with the same sort of stringent quality control we’ve come to expect from the label. ‘Dull Lights’ is singer and guitarist Eric Chenaux’s debut solo album but the man has been playing in bands across the city of Montreal for many years building up his skill and confidence. It is this skill that allows him to tackle the Scottish folk-song genre he has chosen to approach so effortlessly, building in his characteristic ‘damaged’ guitar playing style with ease. The result is something comparable to the new/weird-folk tinkering of Devandra Banhart and his band of followers but at the same time Chenaux’s style is more delicate, riskier and probably more difficult. Maybe a more appropriate point of reference would be a the avant-folk stylings of Scotland’s own Richard Youngs who has a more subtle and more experimental take on the sound than more visible scene luminaries might hint at. Those of you who enjoyed Sandro Perri’s reworkings are sure to find just as much to salivate over in Eric Chenaux’s solo compositions, and apparently the two musicians are to release a collaborative project in the near future…
