*THIRD AND FINAL PART IN THIS INCREDIBLY LIMITED VINYL SERIES - 450 COPIES ONLY FOR THE WORLD* The third and final instalment in Leyland Kirby's trilogy of LPs dawns upon us, putting the finishing touch to one of the most compelling sets of music you'll hear this year. Over the course of this series we've become irretrievably mesmerized by these deeply reflective recordings, drawing so many comparisons to the music of Basinksi, Eno, Budd and Badalamenti that we love so dearly, but executed with the smudged sonic brushstroke of a pessimistic impressionist that makes his music so appealing. The dual influences of life experienced in Stockport and Berlin have played their part in shaping this music, lending a defined chill of lonely, grey, northern European emotions to the feel of these records, a post-industrial soundscape that's as bleak as it is beautiful. 'Memories Live Longer Than Dreams' contains one of the finest tracks in the series - 'Don't Sleep I Am Not What I Seem, I'm A Very Quiet Storm', a towering composition of lush darkness, fading between half forgotten memories of reverberant piano arrangements and cavernous ambience, set with the reverberant space of an empty civic hall, or large cathedral for religiose effect. Sharply contrasting with this is the almost brutal delivery of 'A Longing To Be Absorbed For A While Into A Different And Beautiful World', creating a hear-wrenching friction from coarse shellac textures and chaotic, multi layered polyphonics, perhaps simulating a deeply repressed anguish, or a struggle to reclaim confused memories warped in the recesses of the mind. 'Stralauer Peninsula' also makes a deeply lasting impression, with the wheezing accordian motif and spectral theremin treated with the same shadowy processes to drift about their environment, trapped like ghosts forever doomed to repeat their actions, but allowing us a glimpse at their movements like artefacts in a museum display case, or haunted house freak show. Listening to all three albums back-to-back is a gloriously disorienting experience, one that requires a heavy investment of time, but rewards exponentially. Equally dipping in and out reinforces the somnambulent déja vu effect of "Have I heard this before?", a most pleasureable form of borderline amnesia, or from another perspective, the ultimate escapist music. Most essential - don't miss out.
