When news of a Coil tribute album began to filter through to us earlier this year there was no doubt that the cynicism we felt was shared by many. It's just one of those instances of the source material being so precious and held in such regard that almost any attempt to f*ck with it would result in tears. Mercifully we can only agree with the project's original producer Chris Christopherson when he says "It totally passes my "hairs on the back of your neck standing up" test...", as the first listen has left us enraptured. The interpretations have been lovingly crafted by an amazing cast including Sylvain Chauveau, Bonnie 'Prince' Billy, Yann Tiersen, Matt Elliot and Dälek's Oktopus besides other well selected and like-minded figures, treating the material with the deep reverence and passion it deserves. One of the most poignant moments comes from the Bonnie Prince on his version of 'Ostia' performed to a backing of Ott's ondes Martenot and DAAU's accompaniment with a grasp of the drama and respect for the personality of the original. The instrumentals 'Chaostrophy' and 'Cardinal Points' are simply sublime, perfectly capturing the intangible otherworldliness of the originals, while the striking intimacy of Yaël Naim's version of 'Tattooed Man' must be heard to be believed. 'The Dark Age Of Love' is the sort of release we could rattle on about all day, and should be recommended to anyone of a musically sensitive disposition regardless of whether they've heard a Coil record or not. Excellent.
