In the space of only 3 years since his debut release, the enigmatic producer behind the Redshape alias has carved out a sci-fi tinged and retro-futuristic techno sound of his own. Over the course of some 15 or so twelves his style has been defined by exceedingly high production values and a purposeful return to slower-paced techno-house tempos, making his sound compatible and very popular with discerning DJs and dancers across the world. 'The Dance Paradox' is his impeccably presented debut album, containing eight tracks with an underlying cinematic tech-noir theme. The title sequence 'Seduce Me' introduces the album with a well studied 90's techno spirit, recalling the likes of classic Black Dog and Artificial Intelligence era Warp, followed by the slow-stomp of 'Garage GT'. 'Man Out Of Time' is a rare glimpse of Redshape working with a different beat palette, flanging heavy HipHop breaks under vintage Detroit synths for the sort of cut you'd expect to hear in a Rob Hall set 15 years ago, prime stuff! The narrative takes an unexpected twist with the IDM-influenced 'Rorschach's Game' sounding like a Vladislav Delay tracks remixed by NWAQ, and the dramatic 'Dead Space Mix (Edit)' pinpoints a love of Carl Craig's finest moments from 'Landcruising'. For the older techno heads this album will eak out the ghosts of many of your favourite records, but for a new generation who haven't experienced the 1st, 2nd or 3rd waves this is a near-essential purchase, proving that the elegantly refined spirit of Detroit/Euro techno is still out there. Highly recommended.
