Getting his hands dirty in the crates so you don't have to, the latest in Andy Smith's 'Document' series is a real departure form previous installments - with Smith limiting his choice to just one imprint; the mighty Trojan. Whilst past mixes on Trojan have come from the likes of Madlib & Shortkut, this new selection more than manages to stick out from the crowd - with a set of cuts that justify their inclusion thanks to their more elusive state. Writing in a nice and extensive set of liner notes, Smith charts his love of all things dub and reggae; highlighting the 1970's as the "golden era" and focusing his choices firmly (although by no means exclusively) on this time span. Tracing his passion for the genre back to Ivan O Campbell's 'Reggae Rockers Show' on Radio Severn Sound, each track on 'Trojan Document' comes with a full explanation as to its inclusion - with the likes of Laurel Aitkin's 'Hey Bartender' given the nod as to it having been recorded in the UK after he moved to England in the 1960s' and Johnny Obsbourne's 'Rewind' the first track to set in stone the sound system tradition of restarting a track whenever the crowd approved it. Meticulously picking strands from all over the reggae tapestry (80's new beat, lovers rock, rock steady etc.) Smith has constructed a fantastic peek into the Trojan vaults, displaying an abject love of the subject matter and knowledge that goes well beyond the usual reggae tourism.
