HUDSON MOHAWKE - Butter, Warp

It's pretty impossible to ignore the fact that we're in the midst of an 80's revival right now. We've been fed movies and classic pop culture for the last 20 years, so even by the slightest processes of osmosis, the youth of today are going to be affected by it, unconsciously or hypnagogically. One character to fully appreciate this is Hud Mo, who was probably still slobbering over rusks when the Berlin Wall came down. While his previous releases have explored spangled R'n'B and Hiphop, his long anticipated debut album immerses itself in a half-remembered nostalgia for the 80's with shards of ultra-plastic electro-funk, coke-white pop and snapping synthdrums updated with a semi-detached 00's post-modernism and dancefloor functionalism. Much like the promotional t-shirts accompanying this release, Hud Mo's sounds glare with lucid/lurid hues of neon pink and green from the opener 'Shower Melody' sounding like the extended version of a major film production company's ident, to the tinny drums and shell-suit thin synth tones of 'Joy Fantastic'. 'Ultra-modern studio tweaks on '3.30' identify this as a noughties production, but the twinkling dream sequence sweeps of 'Trykk' and boogie swinging 'Just Decided' featuring OliverDaysoul signify an underlying yearning for times of tight stone-wash denim and oversized white sneakers doing jerky/steppy shoulder dances. It is admittedly an American influenced vision of the 80's however, omitting the commonly perceived drab greyness of the UK at that time, and making connections with Hud Mo's US-indebted Hiphop credentials (a DMC champion, no less), but it's a vision that a whole generation have grown up under the spell of and Hud Mo has very successfully tapped into. The synthetic funk and drum machines of Prince are a major touchstone for his sound and style, but while older listeners may be a little more wary or cynical as that time seems all too recent, for Hud's gen, it was a magical time ingested under the influence of too many sugary cereals. In case it's not clear, we're really into this album, and the appearance of Dâm-Funk next to the awesome 'Star Crackout' should put it high on your list of listening priorities. Very highly recommended.
