RHYS CHATHAM - An Angel Moves Too Fast To See, Table of the elements

As I noted in the review of Rhys Chatham’s ‘Die Donnergutter’ collection, he is a man who changed the face of rock music. ‘An Angel Moves too Fast to See’ was conceived and recorded after a life-altering move from New York to Paris and is a 42 minute, 5 part masterpiece. We don’t have 5 tracks here, we have 5 sections, 5 movements if you like of one beautiful coherent whole. It is easy to see why Sonic Youth give so much credit to Chatham for helping them create their ‘sound’, it was Chatham’s sound that they took most influence from, and hearing ‘An Angel Moves…’ today, it sounds to me like a lost Sonic Youth album, and the finest they never made. The academic sound of minimal compositional elements fused with the distorted unpredictableness of post-punk and no-wave is an endearing mix, and has never been nailed quite so marvelously as on this record. This is an essential part of any alternative rock fan’s collection.
