Despite having Japanese lettering thrown across the sleeve, having a Japanese name (it means fairy) and rather Japanese looking cover-art, Yosei is actually a Swedish indiepop band. So, why all the fixation with Japan then eh? What the hell is wrong with Sweden? Yosei’s debut album for all it’s Japanese posturing is still very much a Scandinavian flavoured affair, fusing subtle jazz production with indie-pop to strike up a neat balance between the sound of Stina Nordenstam’s early recordings and the wonderful Susanna & the Magical Orchestra. I must say I’m quite partial to this kind of whimsical pop, it’s moody without being pretentious and dark without getting comical, I just can’t help feeling it’s being rather mis-sold with all the Japanese themed packaging and some such...
