OUR BROTHER THE NATIVE - Tooth And Claw, Fat Cat

Now I’m certain that musicians are getting younger, it wasn’t long ago when Khonnor released his stunning ‘Handwriting’ album at age 17, and now we have a one-up from Our Brother the Native, a collective containing two 16 year olds and an 18 year old. I’m pretty sure at 16 I was wiring up guitars badly and slashing out Sonic Youth cover versions, and these guys have managed to piece together a full length album? Apparently they met on (and it pains me to say this) Myspace, a horrific website which now counts one third of all Americans as members. I’m sure I’m not the only person who finds this worrying… Still, these three lads met ‘virtually’ (two were school friends, but the other member was on the other side of the USA) and before long they were crafting intricate static-drenched psychedelic folk music. Remarkably, the album is a success, and I think this is partly down to it’s conception – you can hear naivety, innocence and three excitable minds experimenting, uncluttered by the trappings of age. In the new folk/weird psych scene especially there is a tendency towards pretension, cynicism and exclusivity – these three young lads have shown us where we’re all tripping up, and listening to ‘Tooth and Claw’, in all it’s haphazard glory puts a big wide smile on my face. It’s by no means a perfect record, but through the circuit-bent toys, badly harmonized vocals and crumbling waves of static is heart – pure and simple, and this is something that is impossible to fake. Apparently the band have already garnered fans from the Fatcat roster; Max Richter, Vashti Bunyan and Mum happily adding themselves as Myspace contacts – so now they are seemingly set for world domination? Lets hope they won’t collapse under the strain of that ‘difficult’ second album – I mean, they’ve got exams to finish...
