CARLA BOZULICH - Evangelista, Constellation

Evangelista is the latest album from LA based chanteuse Carla Bozulich and is quite a strange release for Constellation – it’s not from the ‘Montreal scene’. Well, sort of – Carla went up to Montreal to record the album and just happened to bump into a whole host of collaborators to help her realise her ideas; members of Godspeed You Black Emperor, A Silver Mt. Zion and Black Ox Orkestar pop up randomly across the record and contribute their unique talents. ‘Evangelista’ was produced by hugely respected bassist Shahzad Ismaily, who submerges the entire work in pools of noise, static and muffled instrumental sounds. This minimal but mysterious technique adds so much to the record, and as Bozulich’s voice makes an appearance for the first time it cracks through the noise perfectly. Cello’s rumble, electronic percussion bubbles and cracks and bowed guitar sweeps across the track, and Bozulich screams her way through it all like a ghostly PJ Harvey or Constellation’s own Elizibeth Anka Vajagic. Bozulich and her collaborators have come up with a widescreen tribute to the darker side of life, I’m sure David Lynch would approve...
