Post-metal fans are spoilt for choice this week, what with scene legends Isis having a classic album re-released and now this, the debut album from Russian Circles which can be added to the burgeoning list of 'must-buy' quiet-loud-deafening albums on offer. Imagine if Mogwai had been listening to a steady stream of Southern Lord records over the last year (they probably did) and instead of adding piano to their last album had added despair, then you'd have some idea of what Russian Circles sound like. 'Carpe' is the opening track and treats us to a Don Cabellero-esque blast of time signature changes, intricate percussion, complex guitar riffage and heavy-as-f*ck distorted chords. Maybe it's math metal then, kids that are desperate to rock out but were forced by their parents to practice their instruments too much, building them up with an inhuman skill, unmatched in the metal genre. Thankfully the band ignores the trappings of raspy metal vocals, so the record never lapses into high camp which I am truly thankful for. 'Enter', along with Pelican's sleeper hit 'A Fire In Our Throats Will Beckon The Thaw' is sure to be taken under the wing of post rock fans who are desperate for something equally as emotionally resonant yet with a little more bite than Mogwai or Explosions in the Sky are prepared to serve up. A heavy recommendation!
