THE RED KRAYOLA - Introduction, Drag City

For a band that have been releasing music since the mid-60s, The Red Krayola sound remarkably fresh. Maybe it’s because they have been collaborating with the best in the scene for so long, mixing and matching musicians, producers and friends to come up with a formula that works every time, forever evolviing. This is certainly a technique many of their contemporaries have ignored as they have fallen by the wayside, and Krayola’s longevity is a testament to this. On ‘Introduction’ they take on Tortoise’s John Mcentire (who recorded and mixed the album) and also accordion player Charlie Abel and bassist Noel Kupersmith who’s pictures adorn the sleeve. The music is a masterclass in modern rock music, you can hear the skeletons of Captain Beefheart/Frank Zappa and some kind of echo of Jim O’Rourke, making ‘Introduction’ an oddly pleasant listen, never too off-kilter to render it unlistenable, concentrating instead on left-of-centre pop music that sounds fresh despite the baggage of influence weighing it down. Recommended.
