IMPLOSION QUINTET
The Future Sound Of Yesterday
CD
Despite the 'Quintet' labeling, this record was made entirely and solely by James R Baker, a British musician based in Norway. The Future Sound Of Yesterday is Baker's debut album, and perhaps ever so slightly in the style of Beirut's first musings, this is one of those albums that throws together a variety of different musical cultures and genres to create its very own language. The Baltic boogie of 'Skeleton Crew' meets with the progged-up Felix Kubin-esque danse macabre 'We Fight The Swan', while 'Nuve Creep' fashions a bluesy-klezmer hybrid and 'Inca Logic' channels retro psychedelic rock. It's all a bit tongue-in-cheek, but Baker's lo-fi instrumentals are fearlessly crammed with resourcefulness and ideas.
