Anyone lucky enough to hear Gamelan Son of Lion’s double cd ‘The Complete Gamelan Son of Lion’ not so long ago on Locust will know how mystifying their sound is. A re-release of a cassette album out of print for 20 years now, ‘Metal Notes’ is another gorgeously deep and involving selection of recordings from the New York based Gamelan ensemble. Now regarded as one of the most influential minimalist outfits in America at that time, ‘Metal Notes’ begins with the beautiful avant-gamelan twinkling of ‘Gamelan NEA’, deep rolling bass notes opening the piece before the tiny delicate and fast bell-like sounds envelope the track. Elsewhere, ‘Gamelan STEINN’ moves into a more Musique Concrete area, with abstract hammer sounds forming the basis for the work, and ‘Through The Looking Glass’ (one of the album’s highlights) taking us into the realms of more traditional gamelan music, with hypnotic repeated chimes lulling us into a deep trance. If you have enjoyed the recent outing from Thomas Stronen on Rune Grammofon or Victor Gama’s Rephlex cd then this is a cd you should really track down without delay.
