My oh my what a lineup we have here. Lee Ranaldo and Thurston Moore from experimental superheroes Sonic Youth, Nels Cline of Wilco (and numerous other projects) and Carlos Giffoni; a Venezuelan musician and master of rewiring acoustic instruments and upsetting sound waves digitally. What do you get when they all play together at once and the result is recorded on a high quality multitrack? Well Important records have generously provided us with the answer to that question - laid out here in one dense 42 minute piece. This is not the first time Nels Cline and Thurston Moore have crossed paths, indeed their ‘Pillow Wand’ collaboration is one of the finest Sonic Youth side projects ever committed to disc and this latest effort is no disappointment. Basically a jam between these masters of experimentation, ‘Four Guitars Live’ is unashamedly experimental. No effort is spared in teasing as much noise and obscene squeals from the four axes as is humanly possible, and the result is hugely enjoyable as well as ear shatteringly intense. Anyone who has enjoyed the sporadic SYR series over the last few years will no doubt lap this up; another essential slice of abstract goodness from the Moore camp. Recommended.
