The solo project of To Rococo Rot's Stefan Schneider, Mapstation has been continually releasing grade-A music that shuns any arty-farty pretensions in favour of candid sonic dissertations that delight in their glowing predilection and aromatic aura for some years now. A previous resident of Staubgold, Schneider is now ensconced over at ?scape with a set of surrounding that perfectly compliment his hi-res approach to instrument led machine music - opening 'Distance Told Me Things To Be Said' with the quaggy-footed 'Horns Version'. Taking an approach to composing that's reminiscent of paint being dropped into water, what begins as a concentrated burst soon spreads and becomes a far more interesting beast - with both 'The Way Things Change' and 'Constant' displaying this to perfection. Fermenting some undulating analogue chimes then incrementally layering some digital manoeuvres atop, 'Sonorities' is then juxtaposed wonderfully by the twinkling 'The Sinuous Ribbon' wherein Schneider captures a mist of macro-lens manoeuvres encroaching on the territory of Jen Jelinek and Triosk... But a whole lot more accessible. Elsewhere, 'Warm Distance' exhibits his love of nuanced nu-dub, 'Listening to Stolkholm' is a waterlogged batch of creased electronica, whilst 'Valencia Was Asleep' is the sound of a slumbering giant's electronic dream. Get lost!
