TOM BROUSSEAU - Empty Houses Are Lonely, Fat Cat

...plus tend to be full of all manner of creaks, clunks and weird noises. Oh, and if the central heating's been left off; bloody freezing. This said, you get the impression listening to 'Empty Houses Are Lonely' that the warm gospel/blues/country voice of Tom Brosseau could readily heat a whole Victorian terrace, giving the nod as he goes to Devendra and (don't run!) the bloke from Turin Breaks. Featuring tracks culled from his past releases, 'Empty Houses Are Lonely' is a compilation that sounds nothing of the sort, with wandering instrumentation and oak-lined vocals flowing through candle-flecked chasms of optimism, solitude and full-on heartbreak. Opening with the supine 'Fragile Mind', Brosseau delivers nothing more than a 20/20 vocal and surefooted acoustic guitar... but somewhere in between leaving his fingers+mouth it grows wings and flys like a bugger, plucking at the emotions with a subtlety akin to Elliot Smith or Nick Drake. From here, the title track adds a frame of bass and wheezy-accordian, 'Mary Anne' has no qualms about displaying its Guy Lormbardo genealogy, whilst 'Bars' could almost be a lost gem from the vaults of Antony and the Johnsons; albeit scrubbed clean of the XXX falsetto... A lovely album that matures with each listen, 'Empty Houses Are Lonely' could just be the soundtrack to this year's dusk. House music!
