MIKE SHANNON - Possible Conclusions To Stories That Never End, Scape

Harking from a nation which has bestowed the world with Avril Lavigne, Celine Dion, Sum41 and Shania Twain, it is often forgotten that Canada has also issued passports to the likes of Neil Young, Leonard Cohen and Mike Shannon. Firmly planting a maple-leaf in the world of minimal house and tech, Mike Shannon minted both the Cynosure and Revolver imprints (home to Afuken, Deadbeat & Pan/Tone), whilst delivering a series of records which plumbed dark and ultra-stripped digital avenues. Loose without becoming flabby, 'Possible Conclusions To Stories That Never End' is a greaseproof batch of minimal tech which firmly understands the necessity to inject a hot filling of soul, whilst avoiding any needless contamination of its futuristic heart. Opening with 'Come To U', the ratchet-tight Montreal aesthetic is given room to breathe, with languid vocals (from Anais) instilling a potent after-hours vibe, whilst under the bonnet Shannon massages queasy synth surges into the thrumming digital engine. Unsettling and seductive at the same time, 'Come To U' is followed by the herky-jerky clatter of 'Sudden Moves' - wherein the Detroit-tooled beats are coated in stuttering digitalis and warm/sinister (delete according to mood) soundscapes. Elsewhere, 'Bathing In Microwaves' exists somewhere between Tejada and Losoul, 'Last One Terrified' features a throaty hip-harp performance from Moral Undulation, whilst 'Tears' is a drafty exercise in jazztronics that recalls Squarepusher's 'Iambic 5 Poetry'. The end.
