With Cat Power (aka Chan Marshall) now widely recognised as The Greatest, it seems a good time to produce the big red book and waltz down memory-lane... Recorded twelve years ago, 'Myra Lee' sees Marshall flirting with a sound that she would refine considerably over the coming decade; taking a lo-fi aesthetic (hello alt.folk!) and bringing it into brusque contact with raw vocals and threadbare production. Kicking off with 'Enough', Marshall's voice seems on the verge of tearing as she laments "I can't watch closer now...", whilst below an almost acoustic post-rock template broils uncomfortably. Beefing up the textures considerably, 'We All Die' follows on like a riff-tastic PJ Harvey, before 'Great Expectations' strips it back to a primordial guitar part for the unreasonably tense build-up and 'Faces' best sign-posts her future sonic explorations. A didactic aural document that will recast her current work for all those discovering 'Myra Lee' retrospectively, Cat Power yet again displays why even getting talked up by Maximo Park can't dull her appeal. Cat. Got. Cream.
