Ahh it's that time again, another gem of a release from what must be fast becoming the most intriguing and consistantly inspiring record labels in the world today. Following on from the hugely acclaimed new-wolrd loveliness of Paavoharju, Fonal this week deliver music from the opposite end of the spectrum. TV-Resistori really have little or nothing to do with the avant/free folk leanings Fonal has become well known for. This album delivers pure pop excess from start to finish, taking cues from Stereolab, The Silver Apples, Raymond Scott and even Felix Kubin. 'Itiaanidisko' is an absolute triumph of fun and frolics over snobbishness and scenester posturing. Analogue synthesizers squeal, 8-bit sounds bubble and those curious Finnish vocals that we've learned to love punctuate everything with a breath of humour and zest. How they manage to make music using what sound like toy keyboards, have choruses that go 'Pong-a-long-a-long' and tracks that use human whistling (shudder) without descending to throwaway kitsch is quite marvellous - on paper this just shouldn't work..on speakers, it's just utterly life affirming. Wonderful.
