With Tortoise and Will Oldham's (aka Bonnie 'Prince' Billy) musical journey via Slint both well documented and cap-doffingly revered, it seems odd to have taken over a decade for them to end up back together for this album of covers. Featuring personal favourites that extend from the likes of Devo through to Elton John and Bruce Springsteen, 'The Brave and The Bold' dismantles each song fully before reassembling it in a style which best suits the piece involved. Opening with Silvana Malta's 'Cravo E Canela', Tortoise and Oldham stick a bottle-rocket up the arse of any preconceived pretension with an interpretation that is both joyfully brash and high-kickingly intense, sounding closer to the likes of Os Mutantes than you'd imagine possible. From this breathless prologue it's to The Boss for 'Thunder Road' with an interpretation that is bruised in it's poignancy and constructed of little more than vocals and minimal instrumentation (bar the grandstanding chorus squall), before the crumbling electronica of Elton John's 'Daniel' casts a long and melancholic shadow over proceedings. Elsewhere, Quix*o*tic's 'On My Own' is an ominous reading that recalls Wayne Cohen, Devo's 'That's Pep' is a breathless electro-pop-rock stomp, whilst Melanie Safka's '(Some Say) I've Got The Devil' is murder-ballad via candle-light.
