JACKIE-O MOTHERFUCKER - Flags Of The Sacred Harp, ATP

Psychedelic music seems to have tripped back into fashion again and thank goodness! With bands like Sunburned Hand of The Man, The No-Neck Blues Band and Jackie-O Motherfucker, we’re in safe hands – and this album is a true testament to the sound as it is at this moment. Supposedly produced by none other than LFO member and Bjork producer Mark Bell (?!) this is an epic journey through not only psych experiments, but also touching on traditional American folk music and blues. The problem I’ve had with a lot of this genre, and the albums that seep out of it (not a huge problem though – I lap this stuff up) is that the recording is so sloppy, mostly due to the way these guys work. Often it is clearly just a document of a jam session, and that’s great – but ‘Flags Of The Sacred Heart’ stands out here because it ‘sounds’ truly excellent. The guitar drones and haunting ambient textures sound thick, deep and slightly unsettling; exactly how it should be. I’m actually getting giddy at the thought of testing this cd on a nice set of speakers, turning it up loud and passing out into the spirit realm. I hear you are supposed to have an animal as a spirit guide or something… I’m allergic to animal hair though, I wonder if they would let me go with a Sony AIBO. Listening to ‘Loud and Mighty’ I doubt you’d need to reach for the mouldy cheese to have an out of body experience; it is purely beautiful, spiritual music. The way this album really succeeds is in its effortless distillation of genres, there are fragments of free jazz, folk, Sonic Youth style avant rock, blues, even traces of growling ambient or Flying Saucer Attack influenced post-rock. Let’s prove to the sprawling music scene that we are ready for more albums of this calibre and get with the New Weirdness, before it starts to become noticeably more old and normal.
