Finally available again. After Alva Noto's genre defining album 'Transform' we started to see glitch music in a very different light. The chin stroking academia was pushed to one side and suddenly we could finally feel the rhythmical shifts and tempered funk buried somewhere deep inside the detail, creating a minimal tapestry that could easily have had Missy hollering her guts out over the top. Now Ikeda has managed to follow on from this concept with an album so deep and detailed that it defies belief. This is a record so heavy that I was worried it would lay waste to my new headphones. With cutting basslines and glitchy percussion detailed to the point of obsessive compulsiveness, it screams of purist production prowess yet is something you can't help but get up and move to. Dataplex begins with an 8 track (7 minute) exploration into the realms of sound design before 'Microhelix' hits you like Lennox Lewis with a bassline to churn up the most seasoned of stomaches. This is almost ragga-core minimal glitch music - and as hard as it is to believe, it's absolute genius. The first time we played this in the office, everyone stopped whatever they were doing and gathered around the speakers to just see what the hell was going on, and then after 5-10 plays we got to grips with the twisted funk of this record. This shouldn't work under any circumstances, but my word it does (there's a note on the raster website that claims some tracks may cause your cd player to malfunction... go figure!), it works to the point of making you want to give up whatever the hell you're doing and get your minimal groove on. BUY.
