DEPARTMENT OF EAGLES - The Cold Nose, Melodic

If you've ever pondered what Radiohead's 'Paranoid Android' would sound like given an overhaul by Four Tet, DJ Shadow, Simian, Scott Herren and Badly Drawn Boy... simultaneously, then Department of Eagles' 'Sailing By Night' is Christmas come early. The product of two B-b-b-brooklyn roommates, Department of Eagles make eclectic-as-you-like coalitions between folk and indie (both with the -tronica suffix), given a Deep Heat pep by beats and production that happily flit around the likes of Josh Davis, Kieron Hebdon, Kid606 and every facet of Scott Herron's multi-track personality. Kicking off with 'On Glaze', you could be excused for thinking the Eagles are another skew-whiffed take on the territory that now exists between Post-Punk, hip-hop and Ye Olde songwriting; as beats clatter, Liquid Liquid bass oozes and sound levels are cheerfully breached. Yet this is a mere introduction, with 'The Cold Nose' really hitting its stride on the aforementioned 'Sailing By Night'; wherein a delicate slice of shuffling acoustica is gently coaxed out of the shell by static dubbed beats, electronic splinters and choral synth armies. It might not sound a great proposition on paper, but in person it comes together a treat and even finds room for some ABBA-esque military pomp without anyone losing their dignity. Elsewhere, 'Noam Chomsky Spring Break 2002' is a dusty marriage of intelligent breaks, c-h-o-p-p-e-d vocals and paper-thin strings (we were hoping for the Anti-war, linguist extraordinaire and Bosnia-atrocity apologist bearing his breasts on Laguna Beach too...), 'Forty Dollar Rug' is some prime junk-hop, whilst 'Ghost in Summer Clothes' could almost (almost!) be a lost Brian Wilson classic.
