Thanks to its championing by the likes of M.I.A. and Diplo, Baile Funk has enjoyed a significant raising of profile over the past year, with DJ Sujinho's new mix a balls-to-the-wall ramraid through some of the scenes leading proponents; all given the stamp of quality by the NYC/Sao Paulo collective Nossa. The opening mix of 'O Chapa E O Chapa', '1 Hora' and 'Aumenta O Som' proves just how much 'Arular' owes to this rough-shod variant of Brazilian funk, combining as it does Baltimore breaks, Arthur Baker beats and Ye Olde tribal rhythms. Elsewhere, Sujinho delights in corrupting the likes of Outkast and the Rolling Stones with fistfuls of Portuguese lyrics and bass rupturing beats, whilst the less known variants of the scene are represented through cuts from Gaiola Das Popzudas, MC Partrao and As Danadinhas.
