JUNIP (JOSE GONZALEZ) - Black Refuge EP, Teme Shet

Back in stock! The first fruit of Jose Gonzalez's new band, Junip will come as a charming addition to those who have already roped off a VIP section in their collection for this extraordinarily talented singer/songwriter of Argentinean descent. If, on the other hand, you've never heard of him; well how many times do you need telling? Sort it! Whereas Gonzalez's solo debut 'Veneer' was a wistful collection of musical gems that eschewed the oft histrionic excesses of romanticism in favour of sleight musical (yet fathom deep emotional) dissertations, 'Black Refuge' sees him embark on a markedly more expansive sound alongside Elias Araya and Tobias Winkerton. Opening through the title track, Junip combine a bluster of organ thrums, thickly rendered percussion and Gonzalez's beautifully placid vocals to produce a sound which is at once spiralling yet very much rooted in the emotional bedrock. By juxtaposing something so serene (Gonzalez) with such a superficially clattering composition works wonders; further heightened by the distinct wane of the off-key chorus. Moving on, Junip then deliver a charmingly mellifluous four minutes of swaying hardboiled folk on the wonderful 'Turn to the Assassin', retreat into darker territories for the brooding 'Official', before delivering a mayfly-like Moog shimmer with 'Chugga-Chugga'. With Gonzalez's position as a discerning cover artist already firmly asserted through his amazingly poignant version of Kylie's 'Hand on Your Heart', Junip choose to close 'Black Refuge' with an interpretation of The Boss's 'The Ghost of Tom Joad'; and somewhat unsurprisingly it's fucking great. If you're after some musically inspired emotional refuge, this could be just the thing for you...
