SUN KIL MOON - Tiny Cities, Rough Trade

'Tiny Cities' is a tribute of sorts to Seattle's Modest Mouse; with Red House Painters front man Mark Kozelek distilling the indie-pomp frazzle of Isaac Brock et al into charmingly forlorn, folk-gilded songs. With a voice that has been mesmerising us here for years, Kozelek seems carved from the same stone as Nick Drake on the opening 'Ocean Breathes Salty', with emotionally bruised vocals gently buoyed by the friable and sleight acoustic instrumentation. It really is beautiful. Elsewhere Kozelek retains this perspective of world-weary solipsism on the stunning 'Trucker's Atlas' and string draped 'Space Travel Is Boring', whilst 'Neverending Math Equation' is statistically proven to be a close relative of Sufjan Stevens and Jose Gonzalez and 'Grey Ice Water' is militaristic Spaghetti-country. Honest. Managing to deftly sidestep any accusations of undue feyness, 'Tiny Cities' is music to watch the sun set. Lovely.
