With a back story that borders on the realms of 'Ulysses' in terms of length and meandering predilection, we'll circumvent the extensive travails which brought these three luminaries together and instead focus on what they've conjured into being; 'The Dolls'. Yet another advocate of this years pervading piano fetishism, 'The Dolls' sees Craig Armstrong's sublime and often heavily treated piano work being force-fed to a relentless jaw of magnifying glass beats (both electronic and live), all assembled with the usual muted flair of Vladislav Delay. As if this union weren't tantalising enough, we are then given an overt glimpse of humanity in the form of AGF (Finland's Abtye Greie), whose hushed vocals drift through the great musical halls of Armstrong and Delay and coax the muted embers of their union into vivid life. At times sharing a distinct watermark with Bjork, Greie's voice has that distinctive quality which allows it to be both simultaneously slight and formidably imposing; an attribute employed to stunning effect throughout. Whilst it would have been blindingly simple for a collaborative project such as this to disappear well up its esoteric arse, it is to the proponents considerable credit that 'The Dolls' remains not just accessible throughout, but nigh on irresistible; fusing an opaque sense of calm with fissures of panegyrical detail. In short, imagine all three of the proponents at their best, then try and visualize how this would sound in perfect harmony. Say hello to The Dolls.
