BLACK METEORIC STAR - Black Meteoric Star, DFA

A real treat for all lovers of a hiss bitten ferric recording from analogue fetishist Gavin Russom. He's been relatively quiet since his celebrated 'Relevee' album explored purist analogue synth tones and Kosmiche spaces with Delia Gonzalez a few years back, but DFA have reeled in some tape for themselves and cut out two fizzing disco/proto-house styles for the 'Black Meteoric Star' album. These are six cuts of raw synth and drum machine jams recorded between 2006-2008 using specialised electronic circuits designed and built by Russom himself. The intuitive feel and extended playing times of most tracks make them sound like they've been recorded in one take and comitted to ancient reel-to-reel tapes lending them a constantly mutating and spectral quality which should appeal to many while possibly excluding the anal audiophile crew. We've not tested them in a club yet but the mesmerizing arpeggiations and insistent 707 rhythms should work purely because they're so intuitive, and not because they punch you in the gut like a Current Value tune. This is totally up the street of anyone into the Ron Hardy/Members Only/Adonis/Jamal Moss thing or the Hague's Unit Moebius crew. Awesome.
