Sounding conspicuously like a vintage prog/jazz/rock album from the late-'60s or early-'70s, The Soundcarriers' Harmonium is bound to find itself getting compared with Broadcast's first couple of albums, or perhaps the less kraut-fixated corners of Stereolab's catalogue. Ornate instrumental configurations, tight male-female vocal harmonies and an overheated period production job form the basics for this enormously enjoyable record, but when you combine clever songwriting with those splashy, analog drum compressions and chunky, progressive bass, there's a recipe for something very addictive indeed. 'Time Will Come' and 'Caught By The Sun' are faultless within their own retro universe, impeccably well performed and finely detailed throughout, but it'd be interesting to hear how The Soundcarriers come across live through a modern PA system: would their David Axelrod-esque charms be left behind with the production? In any case, this album will be a real treasure for anyone currently spinning the Seeland album, having worn-out their copies of The Noise Made By People and Ha Ha Sound.
