Her pseudonym is not the only thing Scout Niblett has lifted from Harper Lee's 'To Kill A Mockingbird', with 'Kidnapped by Neptune' also sharing that work's hot, dusty and resolutely impish atmosphere. Recorded over Christmas in the windy city, 'Kidnapped by Neptune' further elaborates on 2003's 'I Am' drafting Steve Albini back in on production duties (read; DRUMS!) and bolstering her sound with guests Chris Saligoe and Jason Kourkounis. Opening with Niblett's echo-fed vocals, first track 'Hot to Death' seems standard enough, adhering to the 'female singer-sogwriter template' albeit with a voice that penetrates as deep as woodworm. However, after 2 minutes of this harmonious rectitude Niblett plays her trump card and belligerently shows why she deserves your attention; some right royal rock riffage. With a squadron of low flying majorettes, Albini pumps 'Hot to Death' chock full of Pumpkins' guitars as Niblett continues in much the same way as before, providing a fantastically contrasted, aural juxtaposition. Next up is the album's title track, a low slung and sleazy concoction of waterfalling drums'n'bass which Niblett positively drips her "where've you been you crazy girl..." lyrics over the top. Things continue at this phenomenally engaging level throughout and range from the stark and simple 'Pompoms' (keep an eye out for its super-doopa glitchy end), the rawk Queens of the Stoneage pastiche of 'Handsome' and the bourbon soaked heartbreak on closing track 'Where Are you'. Good stuff.
