THE MOUNTAIN GOATS - The Sunset Tree, 4AD

The lexical item prodigious is bandied about a lot these days, usually to pretty eroneous ends. However I think even Samuel Johnson would have to decree that The Mountain Goats' John Darnielle is a dictionary definition of the word prodigious having recorded well in excess of 400 songs. 400! Following on from last year's 'We Shall All Be Healed, 'The Sunset Trees' again delves deep into the bruise blemished heart of Darinelle psyche with songs so confessional in tone that, whilst undoubtedly cathartic, can make for very intimate listening. With a genuinely unique voice that is part Stephen Malkmus, part James Wood and (I kid you not) part Ned Flanders, Darnielle is placed purposefully high in the mix so his confessional vocals can be suitably juxtaposed by the driving, bucolic accompaniment. Like the sugar on the pill, the music is seemingly at odds with the lyrics as Darnielle rallies "I write down good reasons to freeze to death in my spiral-bound book" on 'Broom People' whilst in the background a rowdy pop-folk stomp breezily plays away. However rather than lessen the albums impact, it is this very collision of light and dark which gives 'The Sunset Tree' its distinctive bite and texture.
