*now at a campaign price* Folk has enjoyed a recent resurgence of fortunes thanks to the appearance of diverse artists ranging from Adem, and Will Oldham through to Smog and Devendra Banhart, all of whom took a love of classic folk and instilled it with an appreciation for other varied genres. To this list we can now add the Finland based Drowsy whose debut album 'Growing Green' has been 4 years in the making and follows on from the 'Careless Me' release, part of Fat Cat's esteemed 7" series. The opening track's liltingly sunny musical disposition may lull you into presuming that this is a fondent-centered reading of folk, but as soon as 'Some Cursing' introduces vocals you're left in no doubt of Drowsy's tone. Delivered in a gravel flecked five O'clock shadow of a voice, 'Some Cursing's' opening line of "You are a hoare, I hate you all" indicates we are firmly in Bert Jansch territory a tone that pervades into 'Harmless'. Here Drowsy cross-breed their folk perspective with The Flaming Lips' tarnished grandeur and vocal style, whilst the backing piano uncannily resembles Aphex Twin's 'Avril 14th' curio. Elsewhere the Devandra Banhart comparison is at its most pertinent on the Celtic 'Careless Me' whilst the album's closer 'Plim Plom Autumn Song' assumes a similar lo-fi ethic to early Damon Gough EP's. As queer as folk...and utterly lovely.
