This lost first album from Laura Veirs is thankfully available once again courtesy of Bella Union, home to Veirs’ highly acclaimed “Carbon Glacier” album from last year. The countrified influence on Laura’s music is much more overt on this excellent album, although her fragile, vulnerable voice and often inspired use of surprising instrumentation makes this much more than a straightforward Americana album. Alongside pedal steel guitar, banjo, resonator guitar and traditional structures, subtle electronic effects and edits augment Laura’s travelling tales into something that defies easy categorisation. In short – this is a fragile yet sumptuous home listening album that fans of Laura’s more recent material will adore. Highly Recommended.
