This second album from Laura Veirs, already hailed by many as the finest singer-songwriter album of the year, sees this immensly gifted artist take a considerable leap and bound away from the straighter Country-fied stylings of her debut “Troubled by the Fire”. Introducing a more isolated songwriting style, augmented by a homespun assortment of crackling instruments : Banjo, glockenspiel, piano, vibraphonette, trombone, guitars and all manner of percussion, the songs here lull you in with their immense simplicity and unerring beauty, regardless of the subject matter at hand. Veirs comes across like Kimya Dawson at her most subdued, or perhaps a less troubled Kirstin Hersh, with Modest Mouse member Tucker Martine producing the album with an evident compassion for every note and word spoken. “Carbon Glacier” is one of the most evocative and moving albums you’ll hear this year – a massive recommendation for an album that requires your immediate attention.
