SOUL JAZZ / NICKY SIANO - The Gallery, Soul Jazz

Nicky Siano is widely acknowledged as the instrumental figure in the creation of the modern cult of the dj. His stints at his own warehouse venue The Gallery are credited as some of the formative new york parties, the guy even had Larry Levan and Frankie Knuckles blowing up balloons, setting up the food bar, preparing punch and handing out acid. Basically inventing disco: using universally minded soul and funk cuts with a third turntable, sound effects and a state of the art, bespoke sound system, Siano was eventually the jock of choice for the studio 54 glitterati, but its the gallery selections on which his reputation rests. Famously, Arthur Russell was converted to 'disco' - a term Siano hates for understandable reasons - after a session at the Gallery, and the selection here helps to explain why. Undisputed dons like Bobby Womack, Bill Withers, The Isley Brothers, The Temps and Bar Kays rub it up against dj's dj selections like rocker Bonnie Bramlett's 'Crazy bout my baby', Zulema, Exuma, Bar Kays, and Pointer Sisters' awesome 'Yes we can can' from their first album. Great party records, good vibes, love is the message: shame Nicky couldn't include his MFSB anthem - all told though, still an excellent selection.
