CARL CRAIG & MORITZ VAN OSWALD - Recomposed : Music by Maurice Ravel & Modest Mussorgsky, Universal

Back in stock. The prospect of Carl Craig and Moritz von Oswald collaborating again is a techno fanboys wet dream, add in the fact that they are recomposing music by Maurice Ravel & Modest Mussorgsky, and you get a very unexpected and slightly odd sensation. 'The Bolero' is possibly one of the 20th centuries most famous and highly regarded classical compositions, with Mussorgsky's 'Pictures From An Exhibition' regarded with similar reverance. The pieces given to von Oswald and Craig were unmixed multi track recordings of the Berlin Philharmonic, directed by Herbert von Karajan in 1987, to which Moritz isolated individual elements and assembled lines for pre production. Over the course of a year the pair visited each other for sessions with the these separated orignal elements, in studios in Berlin and Detroit respectively and together with an armoury of vintage drum machines and legeandary analgoue synthesizers, set about recomposing the original tracks according to their own vision. Floating in on a dreamy intro, the signature 3/4 tattoo of 'The Bolero' punctuates the ambience with the first movement, upon which the recognisable wind section comes to life, accented by the phased chimes set deep in the mix. It's not until the fourth movement that the techno element really becomes apparent, as shaved hi-hats form a stringent pattern, a stray synthesizer lick builds shape and the harmonics begin to morph into something much fresher and modern with the application of filters and more prominent synthlines. The Interlude could almost be from BC's 'radiance' with the watermarked touch of Moritz von Oswald clear to hear, which sweeps us into the albums longest section, movement 5. This 12 minute episode sheds the rhythm for an expansive and epic relook at Modest Mussorgsky's 'Pictures', stirring the ebulliant brass and quivering strings into their own version which sprouts a thick house rhythm that would have shocked either of the original composers in their day but sounds immense here. The scope of this project is magnificent, and a truly fascinating addition to the catalogues of these two producers.
