In which Jeff Mills solves one of the great mysteries of the modern Techno age and goes through a selection of tracks that have been the biggest musical influence on him through the years. The selection is inspirational from The Wiz, and not surprisingly he takes some time to visit some early offerings from the electronic and soul spectrums. Latin and Brazilian cuts from Ramirez, Vince Montana Deodato and Gerardo Frisina are very enlightening when it comes to understanding Jeff's rhythmic and percussive mastery, and actually the evolution of detroit techno as a whole. The Frisina cut is rare as hen's teeth and supreme. There's well aired formative deep disco from the likes of Slick and Starflight, yet its fully fleshed out with more soulful cuts from the likes of Teddy Prendergrass, Jackie Moore, Geraldine Hunt, Goldie Alexander and even the don daddy of Morgan Heritage, Denroy Morgan himself with some funking for jamaica on 'I'll Do Anything For You'. Fast forwards through the eighties and the fuel for Mills musical enhancement seems scarily prescient, Telex, Change and jacking Blake Baxter morph into the prototype uk techno sounds of Insync vs Mysteron, Neil Howard and perhaps surprisingly Bandulu. The quest for the newest records, the most future sounds available has defined the man's own output, and part ways through this excellent collection the original seam of influences here begins to make itself very plain indeed. The man even turns his hand to hip house pulling out the splendid King Sun piece 'On The Club Tip', which had us all going in the office. Some great sleeve notes as well, filled with priceless reminiscence from the ruling deejay himself. Excellent - past, present and future in perfect synopsis. Illuminating stuff.
