The uncategorisable Hand On The Plow imprint tills a fertile groove with the freakiest slab of wax you're likely to hear this week coming from Louisiana's imagineIAM. We've got very little information to hand about this guy, but his sound tells us more than enough with an upbeat and abstracted stream-of-(rhythmic)-consciousness spilt over three tracks of original material from the man backed with a remix from label heads Beckett & Taylor. The hyper-syncopated rhythms of opener 'Merry Go Round' could be geographically located somewhere between NY freak indie from Gang Gang Dance/Animal Collective, charged West African tribalism and Brazilian favela funk, (which would dump it somewhere in the middle of the Atlantic) add this to the rhythmic hyperbabble and M.I.A style melodic chanting and you've got a reet headf*ck of a track. 'Exacto Kiss' switches styles to a cajun-punky stomp of chopped guitars and insane birdcalls sounding like you've just dropped in on some wild Lousiana pub's back-room session and when the track stops all the locals stare you out. Beckett & Taylor's remix of 'Merry Go Round' electrifies the rhythm with thunderous cybo-ragga kicks and synth stabs but doesn't come close to the unhinged rhythmic spool of the original, and miles away from imagineIAM's final track 'Guardians of tha patty cake makers', which somehow combines quasi Derek Bailey-ish guitars with a menagerie of vocal exclamations and clattering percussion to once again leave your head spinning but your face grinning at the lunacy of it all. Expect the unexpected - awesome twelve.
