Back in stock! Formed in part from live concert recordings, and partly from a studio recording session (with Tim Holmes of Death In Vegas), this new album from erstwhile Warp act Red Snapper comes with six brand new compositions plus two remixes (one each from Kelpe and Subway). The band take the shape of a three-piece, combining the various disciplines and techniques of krautrock, funk and modern jazz. 'Brickred' seethes with future funk sophistication, introducing new member Tom Challenger who mans the reeds, reinforcing the live feel with lyrical clarinet flows playing off the jagged guitar stabs. Challenger switches to sax on 'Lagos Creepers', a slick jazz number reinforced by sharp drumming and languid riffs. Next, 'Wanga Doll' coats itself in thick, bluesy riffs, lining up guitars with sax for a bit of a '70s funk rock feel. Once again shifting genres, 'Moving Mountain' is about as overtly dub-influenced as the album gets, playing around with echo chamber dynamics and tight rhythm section grooves. As for those remixes, Kelpe latches onto the slippery funk of 'Clam' and totally reimagines it as a motorik krautrock marathon. Subway on the other hand totally warp and dismantle 'Brickred', transforming the whole thing into a fluttering post-jazz soundscape that still manages to keep within the spirit of the original.
