JUNIOR BOYS - Last Exit, Kin

If you can wade past all the heaps of press and praise the Junior Boys have had lavished on them these last few months and allow yourself a moment alone with this quite remarkable debut album, you may just find yourself in the company of one of the most enjoyable, fresh and unspeakably cool albums of the last few years. "Last Exit" has been described in reference to a million different things, most notably focused on its visionary mesh of timbaland/two step beats in line with pure, inspired, classic flipped-over songwriting. This is the sort of album that doesn't come along very often, daring to douse the mainstream with all manner of broken, cutting edge techniques and tweaks, while giving the know-it-all guardians of underground music a good excuse to loosen up, shed the snobbery with which they so often greet anything remotely accessible. To stick with the journalistic consensus and give away the essence of "last exit", what you have here is a whirlpool of influences, from Depeche Mode through to Timbaland, Maurizio and the Basic Channel legacy through to New Order, Throbbing Gristle through to King Tubby, Ryuchi Sakamoto through to Horsepower Productions. Hard to imagine any other record this year that will inject so much life into pop music, or one that will give the underground as much inspiration and validity as this. File under : classic.
