VARIOUS / STATIC CARAVAN - Teaism: Music inspired by the art & culture of tea, Static Caravan

The theme of this compilation was suggested by Static Caravan's own Stefan Panczak (aka Inch-Time), and yes, it really is a selection of music based on "the art and culture of tea". A diverse range of artists from a wide variety of genres and disciplines takes part in the compilation, and the standard is unnervingly high throughout. The likes of Tunng, , Dollboy, Serafina Steer and Pimmon all do themselves justice, and there's a classy showing from Max De Wardener who introduces the album with the self-explanatory 'Kettle Song'. Inch-Time himself provides a highlight via the glistening chimes of 'Snow Jewel', which nicely sets up similarly fine electronic fodder by Am/Pm on the deep, propulsive ambience of 'Shennong'. And what happened to our boy Xela? He just came over all sensitive on 'Genmaicha Dorou', delivering a piece that should be counted among his very best work. Setting aside the noisy darkness of his recent form he conjures something unashamedly beautiful, bringing to mind Steve Roden's Light Forms in its dissection of clanking objects and gently expressive chord sequences. There's some beautiful sax playing on here too - more please, John. Keeping the good stuff coming, Oblong (missed opportunity alert: Oblong should have changed the name to Oolong for this comp appearance) makes like Mùm on 'Green Grass Of Tunnel' during 'Four PM', a fine acoustic/electronica ditty and no mistake.
