VARIOUS / MONIKA - 4 Women No Cry Vol 3, Monika

By means of a recap for those as yet unfamiliar with the 4 Women No Cry format, this album series represents an initiative by Monika Enterprises to bring new forward-thinking female recording artists to wider attention, showcasing largely unheard of producers and songwriters. The artists in question get four or five songs to demonstrate their talents, fitting nicely into an hour or so of experimental pop music. This episode of the 4WNC series begins with Colombian talent The Sound Of Lucrecia, whose music is perhaps the most conventional sounding in certain respects: it's a little more polished and fully formed than can be the case with this series, but that's very much to Lucrecia's credit, and both album opener 'Answering Machine' and its follow-up 'De Vez En Cuando' are right up there with the very best pop music to have come to light via Monika over the years. Next comes Manekinekod from Greece, whose music is a tad more digital in execution, finding trackslike 'Room 302' - reveling in sophisticated glitchcraft and detailed soundscapes, perhaps a little like AGF. The breezy lo-fi pop of Julia Holter comes as something of a surprise after all this hi-tech seriousness, but her music is massively engaging, at times bringing to mind a more organised version of Islaja. Finally, Brazillian Liz CHristine draws the album to a close with four headspinning sound collages complete with barely decipherable narration. It's probably fair to say that this third 4WNC album is the most consistent in the series thus far - it certainly boasts the greatest concentration of outstanding moments. Very good indeed.
