ANTONY & THE JOHNSONS - Another World, Rough Trade

. 'Another World' resumes form, marking a return to the kind of intimate balladry he was channelling when last we heard from him, although there's some welcome dissonance soaring in the background, destabilising the sheer elegance and tranquillity of it all. 'Shake That Devil' comes as something of a surprise, featuring Antony's voice accompanied by an abrasive drone until around halfway through a drumbeat of almost industrial intensity fires up with a few loose saxophone squawks filling the gaps. It's actually a very effective, if slightly unsettling piece, necessarily providing respite between all the more obviously beautiful piano-driven material. The EP is brilliantly balanced and - as these things should - it leaves you wanting for more despite the fact that Antony's voice seems to have been ubiquitous over recent years A most satisfactory return.
