VARIOUS / BOYS NOIZE - BNR Vol. 1, BOYSNOIZE

Alex Ridha looks back over the past three years or so of releases on his Boys Noize imprint, compiling a selection of highlights across two discs. As you'd imagine, his own work (under the name Boys Noize, that is) features heavily, both as a remixer and producer in his own right. Comparisons with labels like Ed Banger and Kitsune are bound to arise, and there's just cause for that: not only can you hear a similar sound palette at work here, but Ridha has been known to show up on the latter Parisian label (specifically on last year's 'Feel Good (TV=Off)'). As with Kitsune, the Boys Noize agenda is far from narrow, not only encompassing various strands of dance music, but delving into the realms of electronic indie pop music from time to time too. An early example of this comes on the remix of The Faint's 'The Geeks Were Right', with similarly minded electro-rock riffing arising from Einzeller's 'Schwarzfahrer'. You can hear a strong Daft Punk (via Justice) influence running through productions like Ridha's 'Volta82' or Siriusmo's 'Simple', and it's these more explicitly mainstream sounding excursions that make the compilation so entertaining, balancing out the rougher-edged electro-disco tendencies with welcome moments of levity.
