Having made his name as Beth Orton's sideman, guitarist and writer Ted Barnes arrives at this solo album with a brace of collaborators including Francoiz Breut, Kathryn Williams and Orton herself, who co-writes and provides vocals on 'Caught Out', a strikingly lovely piece of contemporary folk right in the middle of a record made up of soundtrack influences and instrumentation with an expansive, European flavour. There are shades of Yann Tierson on the instrumental title track, whilst 'These Foolish Things' evokes more of an Eastern sound in its harmonic make up. This mix of songwriting, fingerpicked guitar and more expansive compositional arrangements results in a varied and dynamic album from Barnes, whose own instrumental skills are always impressive and firmly situated at the centre of this record. The selection of guest vocalists is well judged too: Francoiz Breut's inclusion only serves to compliment the cinematic, continental sounds of 'All That's Real' and the Tom Waits-like 'Dreams And Hopes'. A great example of how acoustic guitar music can develop into something bigger and more ambitious, Barnes' Portal Nou is a refreshingly ambitious and artfully crafted album. Highly recommended.
