The impeccable Workshop imprint is another one of those anonymous labels that the Hardwax crew do such a good job of fostering - and in the space of only a couple of releases the label has attained a reputation and a following that does justice to that impressive connection. This new twelve from Kassem Mosse follows on from a couple of blistering releases for the Mikrodisko label and once again showcases Kassem's unique ability with sparse beats and minimal dancefloor arrangements. But this ain't no trendy bleepy business - the A-side opens with a percussive skeleton that sounds like little else that comes to mind, situating itself somewhere between developed, dusty hip hop and intoxicated, hazy 4/4. Much like the recent Norman Nodge twelve, the emphasis here is on doing something EXTRAordinary with a perfectly ordinary palette, and that's something that Mosse does with exceptional dexterity on this incredible opening track. Flip over the twelve and things get a whole lot stranger and more interesting, deploying a hazy House killer that's so slow and sultry it makes Theo Parrish seem rushed, with the drums opening up in slinky fashion, the Bassline so low it seems to rub against the very foundations of the drums and the strings almost unravelling by the weight of their surroundings. Quite astonishing stuff and an absolute must for those of you who like it deep, heavy and incredibly sloooow. The EP closes with another track that seems to be playing at the wrong speed, this time round the complex, pounding techno of Surgeon et al is slowed down to a motorik chug, the detail shining through the gaps exposed as the track starts to unfold. Incredible stuff - one of the most interesting and engrossing Techno records we've heard this year. An absolute must - KILLER!!!
