JACKIE MITTOO - Champion In The Arena, Blood & Fire

Okay, a couple of weeks back we advised circumspection - when a somewhat rush-released Mittoo comp looked to steal Blood & Fire's thunder. Fear not - the deluxe edition is here - even if you've got the Soul jazz retrospective or better, some originals, this should still be essential as well. Mittoo just stands as one of those key figures, a session guy whose instrumental visions not only backed up the entire catalogue of reggae from The Skatalites right on through, but as a leader in his own right, versioning popular tunes, making them his own and spontaneously, jazz-style, improvising a stream of riddims, many of which are used to this day. Eight tracks rest in common with the inferior Attack release, "Drum Song", originally a John Holt b-side, and the root of a legion of riddims, remains unmatchable. What's more, there's two cuts to 'Death In The Arena', killer instrumental version of 'Death trap', Sly, Robbie, Skully, Chinna and Winston Wright on the 76-77 session, recorded at Harry J's Dynamic and Channel One, Bunny Lee production and nuff evidence of the superior influence of a King tubby's mix. Cornerstone music.
