Demons, the duo of Steve Kenney and Wolf Eyes' Nate Young have been getting a fair amount of attention recently, having put the feelers out via a number of low-key cassette releases over the past year or two, eventually delivering this, their magnum opus for the scene-leading No Fun imprint. Evocation takes noise music into an entirely more intriguing realm than the usual dirge-bound excursions emanate from the US underground. In fairness, they're all good and well, but an album like this is required now and then to freshen things up a little. Demons fuse abrasive, clamorous sound-sculpting with analogue electronics in a fashion that at times brings to mind Louis and Bebe Barron's Forbidden Planet soundtrack - particularly on opener 'Firewalk', doused in sinuous electrical impulses, vintage echo and archaic wobbulating tonalities. 'Grey Lady' is less easy on the ears, meandering its way through surreal LFO twitching and air raid sonic narratives. Things only get more confusing and sinister from here on out, with 'Pre-Existence' bristling with primordial electric torments, before the album plunges yet further into the darker recesses of the imagination via a final piece not listed on the album's sleeve, like some phantom limb projecting unseen into the aether. Right on.
