MIA of Sub Static and Karloff arrives on Areal for two new productions pressed onto red vinyl. Essentially, both tracks are fairly sparsely populated, relying on the sparest of beat frameworks coupled with a particularly defined bass presence for their driving force. A-side 'Don't Catch My Soul' is littered with diced up vocal samples and an odd squawking noise that might be described as Mr Cadbury's Parrot-esque. There are more odd noises popula... Michaela Grobelny releases her second for the Sub Static label and ups the quality quotient again. Very much Cologne in style: tiny micro-developments, grooving basslines in tow and sublime, brooding, floating melodies, shimmering around in the mix. Two mixes of the title cut, the second shot with a kind of poignancy, keep the consistency level well up there for this ever improving label.

The return of m.i.a., not the 'galang' laydee but cologne and sub static's highest of the lowest floor fillers, running on even tighter frequencies than ever. "sweet november" speaks of stray souls at large in rainy northern nights, scattered by thunder, a rocksteady electrohouse groove, ripe for tenderising more dark-school selections, or warming up and adding much needed depth to more commercial sets. M.i.a makes unashamed crossover music, a bu... READ MORE ABOUT: MIA, Sweet November, Sub Static ![]()

Minimal techno producer MIA (aka Michaela Grobelny) has released across a number of different labels over the past few years - Traum and Trapez to name but two, but it's Sub Static, the label she runs alongside Falko Brockspier that's been the outlet for her productions of late such as this full-length and lead-up single 'Safe Night', which sounds in fine form here: it's a slow grooving slice of laid bare techno with Mia's floating, almost vacant... Michaela Grobelny, has cultivated a word of mouth reputation over the last few years with a string of excellent singles and one off tracks for the likes of Traum and Sub Static labels. Some vocals here come straight from the heart, but check the sidelong opener 'Fortress' for some basement style beats. 'Dark deeds' indeed explores the shady sides of underground acid, while 'Fade the pages' emotes in an underwater vocal style. Balancing the squidg... M.I.A. returns, fresh and flighty from her debut album release on Sub Static, with 2 deep as you like bumpers. The title track heads off into funky bass territory with a walking low-end synth and solid 4/4 drums that stay minimal yet deliver a full groove, fatbacked. 'Don't cry' hangs lower, with a faintly italo vibe to the rhythm parts, filled with tension, energy and drama this should go off in most discos across the land.

Fresh from their Trapez release M.I.A. arrive on sister label Traum, dropping more of their infectious and soon to be hammered 4/4 workouts to wax. ‘Midnight’ is a smooth burning squelchy 4/4 number that slowly Builds up with emotive keys and breezy melodies, nice. The title track offers understated pads over the minimal beats with a tender and sparse vocal over the top that keeps the warmth and depth intact, a great starter for a deep set. Last... The productions of Mia 'M.I.A' have been regulary featured in these pages over the last two or three years, primarily on her native Koln homebase label Sub Static. So its great to find her not only cropping up across town on Trapez, with a new sound for the occasion. This is squarely directed at the dancefloor, pointed chirpy trills issue a call to pop, but the wicked strings and controlled build speak of minimal deadliness. Her funk contains the...
